How it Works
Choose your plan.
Pick a monthly, 3, 6, or 12-month plan — or send it as a gift. Have more than one little one? Add a Seedling Set so each child gets their own materials.
We deliver everything.
A new themed box arrives each month with a picture book, all the activity materials, and a simple guide. Open it and go — no prep, no trip to the store.
Play, create & connect.
Read the book, explore the activities together, and watch your child build the fine motor skills and confidence writing grows from — at their own pace.
Why it Works
Confidence before correctness.
There are no wrong answers here. Kids explore at their own pace, so writing feels joyful instead of stressful — and confidence comes first.
Made by a teacher, not an algorithm.
Every box is designed by Erin Moffet, an early-childhood educator with 20+ years of experience and a National Writing Project alum.
Screen-free & done-for-you.
Everything arrives ready to go. The only thing you bring is time together.
Writing starts before the pencil.
Long before kids form letters, they build the hand strength and coordination for writing by pinching, squeezing, drawing, and stamping. Every activity is designed around those first steps.
What's Inside
What's Inside
Each box includes:
A picture book — a new book to keep, chosen around each month's theme. You're building a home library, one month at a time.
8–10 hands-on activities — writing & drawing utensils, paper, and tactile tools. All included, nothing extra to buy.
A simple guide — easy, step-by-step ideas that show you exactly what to do, and why it helps.
Story invitations — gentle, open-ended prompts to draw, scribble, and tell stories at their own pace.
Why Families Love Us
Every child has a story to tell.
Writing begins long before pencils and paper.
It begins in the stories children tell through play, drawings, and their endless curiosity about the world.
Rooted in Writing helps families nurture that early spark — weaving imagination, rhythm, and connection into literacy in a way that feels natural and joyful.
Meet Erin - the heart behind the box.
Hi, I’m Erin — an early-childhood educator with over 20 years in the classroom. I started Rooted in Writing after watching too many young kids get pushed toward writing before they were ready, losing the joy along the way.
Every box is my way of giving families a gentle, research-backed place to start — where a scribble, a drawing, and a story all count.
Find the right fit for your family.
Recurring Subscriptions
Try it one month at a time. No long-term commitment — cancel whenever you need to.
Writing isn't a skill children learn in a single sitting — it grows slowly, through repetition, play, and the quiet confidence that builds when a child feels seen as a storyteller. That's why a subscription matters. Each month, a new box arrives with everything you need to keep that rhythm going: a picture book, hands-on materials, and gentle guidance rooted in how young children actually learn.
No planning. No sourcing supplies. Just open, explore, and play.

Questions? We’ve got answers.
-
Rooted in Writing is designed for children ages 3–6. That said, every child develops at their own pace — some younger children are ready for the activities with a little support, and some older children still love them. Trust your instincts.
-
We ship on a monthly cycle. Subscribe by the 15th of the month to receive the current month's box — after that, your first box ships the following month.
-
Yes — always. Month-to-month subscriptions can be canceled at any time with no fees or fuss. For multi-month plans, you can cancel before your next billing cycle begins. We never want you to feel locked in.
-
It happens! If you receive a box with a book you already own, you're welcome to donate it to a little one who doesn't have it yet — or keep it as a home library duplicate. The activities are the heart of each box, and they work just as well with a second copy on the shelf.
-
In most cases, yes. If your family receives funds through a state ESA, an Education Freedom Account (EFA), or a California charter school, you can likely put them toward a subscription.
We're currently an approved vendor in Arizona, Arkansas, and New Hampshire, and we work with California charter families too.
How you order depends a little on your program. Most families either request an itemized invoice from us and pay through their program's portal (like ClassWallet), or place an order through their charter school's system — and many programs offer a direct-pay option, so nothing comes out of your own pocket.
Our boxes are nonsectarian, and our writing prompts align with Common Core standards for grades TK–2, which keeps us eligible under most funding guidelines and means your child's work can double as work samples where they're required.
For step-by-step instructions, find your program — Arizona ESA, Arkansas EFA, New Hampshire EFA, or California charter funds — or, if your state isn't listed yet, tell us where you are.
